The Washington Post is being sold to Jeff Bezos
, the man who founded Amazon.com. Bezos is paying $250 million for the Post. Good for him—most people these days don’t spend anything on newspapers. It’s not clear what Bezos will do once he has his own newspaper. He can’t be as bad as Rupert Murdoch, if only because nobody can be.
We don’t know yet what the future of the news will be. We might not know in the future either, because nobody will be reporting on it. Howard Fineman says
that the Huffington Post is the future of journalism. If that’s true, we might not have a lot of local investigative reporting. But we will all know stuff like “How Porn Sex is Different from Real Sex,” “The 33 Best Pizzas in America,” and “6 Horrifying Dark Sides to Creatures You Think Are Adorable.” (At the time of writing, all currently on the HuffPo front page!)
RNC Chairman Reince Priebus is threatening to pull the GOP’s 2016 primary debates
from NBC and CNN if the networks go ahead with movie projects about Hillary Clinton. Reince wrote to NBC and CNN saying “This suggests a deliberate attempt at influencing American political opinion in favor of a preferred candidate.” Hey Reince, maybe you should have cc’d Fox News on that letter.
Oprah Winfrey has made her first comments
on the killing of Trayvon Martin. Oprah on Trayvon—you can tell just from the names involved that racists won’t like it. Oprah said “Trayvon Martin paralleled Emmett Till, let me just tell you. In my mind, same thing.” She nailed that. A black boy murdered and the southern justice system let his killers escape—the only difference was the Skittles. The biggest substantive difference between the murder of Emmett Till and Trayvon Martin is that the killers of Emmett Till didn’t have a Stand Your Ground Law to shield them. That was 1955—they still had Jim Crow laws to shield them. Fox News contributor Jesse Watters says
he had hoped that Oprah would “add a little unity.” How—by blaming black people the way everybody on Fox News is doing?
Finally, a man in Pennsylvania went on a shooting spree
at a township meeting, killing three people. There are parts of Pennsylvania that seem like Alabama with snow. Newell evidently went on a shooting spree because of a dispute about junk that he kept on his property. Wow. This is like a sick and tragic mash-up of “Hoarders” and “The First 48.” The pictures of Newell’s properties show that he posted a bunch of those black-and-red “No Trespassing” signs that property rights lunatics love to post. They really should keep a watch list of people who buy those! Newell reportedly refused to install a septic system on his property, and stored human feces in buckets… or what Rand Paul would call “exercising his freedoms.”
