#RandiRhodes @RandiRadio blog: New Day, New Fight

President Obama is nominating former Nebraska Senator Chuck Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. The biggest problem that conservatives have with Chuck Hagel is that he is a Republican and he’s still willing to serve in a Democratic administration. They used to refer to serving in the administration of the rival party as public service. These days, Republicans refer to it as collaboration.

Former NRA chairman Marion Hammer has equated an assault weapons ban with racism. How vile! Next, they’re going to say that Martin Luther King would support assault weapons... if he were still alive. It’s absurd to say that some sort of “discrimination” against assault weapons is like racism. Gun control advocates aren’t out there saying “But some of my best friends are automatic rifles!” According to Hammer, “this is about banning the ugliest guns, it’s about cosmetics and it has nothing to do about how a firearm works.” Nobody cares about banning the “ugliest guns.” A gun can look like Louie Gohmert, and I wouldn’t want to ban it unless it’s capable of killing dozens of people in a matter of seconds.

There was another shooting in Aurora, the Colorado town where the Batman movie massacre took place. The entire town of Aurora has post-traumatic stress disorder. And the NRA’s only response is to suggest more trauma and more stress. The number of calls to the crisis hotline in Aurora has more than double since the theater shootings in July. If the NRA were running the crisis hotline, they’d be telling people “Just remain calm. We’re getting more guns as soon as possible.”

In the wake of all these killings, the state of Georgia has introduced four new bills to loosen restrictions on guns. It seems that no matter how many shootings we have, it’s not enough for some people. One of the bills is called the Restoring Gun Rights During State of Emergency Act. It prevents the governor from restricting the buying and selling of guns during a State of Emergency. I guess that the next time there’s a flood in Georgia, the plan is to shoot it.

Lisen to The Randi Rhodes show Monday through Friday 6 PM to 8 PM on WWRL 1600.
