#RandiRhodes @RandiRadio blog: Beyond the Pale

The NRA is defending its attack ad on President Obama’s daughters. Well, not so much defending, as denying it says what it says. Asked about the ad, NRA President David Keene claimed “Nobody was talking about his children.” So, who does the phrase “his kids” refer to, if not to his kids? When Keene said “Nobody was talking about his children.” Maybe he meant “Nobody was talking about his children, so we decided to bring it up.”

President Obama said yesterday that it’s high time for Congress to confirm a permanent director for the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms. You know they would have done it ages ago if it were the Bureau of Condoms, Evolution, and Electric Cars. Republicans try to weaken government by denying it effective leadership. When you get down to it, that’s why they ran Mitt Romney for president.

Rush Limbaugh has mocked the children who had written letters to the White House about gun violence, saying “You got these little kids there. They don’t want to die.” And he began mock sobbing. Evidently Rush thinks that not dying is too much for these kids to ask for. In the world that he and the NRAwant, kids need to know that they could die at any moment.

The only suggestion the NRA has for stopping gun violence is armed guards at our schools. That’s great for the NRA, since the NRA’s real constituency is the gun manufacturers. They get to sell assault rifles to lunatics, and then they get to sell guns to armed guards to protect us from the lunatics they armed.

Virginia Tech survivor Colin Goddard has a good point. He said that if it were true that more guns would make us safer, “then we would already be the safest place in the entire world. We are quite the opposite of that.” You got that—in terms of the risk of getting shot, we’re basically Somalia with a better standard of living. And of course, if it’s up to Republicans, the standard of living thing is out the window too.

Listen to The Randi Rhodes Show Monday through Friday 6 PM to 8 PM on WWRL AM 1600.
