Richard Mourdock, the GOP candidate for the Senate in Indiana, says that babies resulting from rape are a gift from God. If they are, I wish God would find a better way of delivering the gift. Mourdock said it at a debate. He was trying to explain the reasons for his opposition to abortion even in cases of rape or incest. The bad news for him is that I think he did. Mourdock said “life is a gift from God, and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape, that it is something God intended to happen.” Just to be clear, Richard—you’re not God’s official spokesman on this are you? I think you might be a rogue surrogate. I don’t know about rape being a gift from God, but Mourdock’s opponent in the race certainly thinks the comments were a gift from God.

At this late date there is no possibility of replacing Mourdock on the ticket—so the Republican Party is going to be forced to carry him to term. Senator John Cornyn, head of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said “Richard and I, along with millions of Americans – including even Joe Donnelly – believe that life is a gift from God.” Yeah John, we weren’t talking so much about the gift as about the packaging.

Mitt Romney has come to Indiana to campaign for Mourdock, and Mitt has appeared in Mourdock’s TV ads. You can really judge a guy by the company he keeps—and that works both ways when you’re talking about Mourdock and Mitt. Romney’s campaign spokesperson said “Romney disagrees with Richard Mourdock’s comments, and they do not reflect his views.” Of course, they would have reflected Mitt’s views... if that’s what it took to win the Republican nomination.
A BBC poll of people around the world shows that people in other countries much prefer President Obama to Mitt Romney. One of the reasons has to be that there aren’t many countries on earth that Mitt hasn’t insulted. The country with the biggest pro-Obama edge is France. The reason for that is obvious—Mitt Romney lived in France! Mitt lived in France... and the French hate Mitt. Do you see a pattern? People in Michigan, California, and Massachusetts all hate Mitt too. Everyplace that Mitt lived ends up hating Mitt. It’s a good thing for Mitt Romney that he never lived in Ohio!
